Geocache ? Empty Geocache ?

Any geocachers here? I am wanting to try it out but have some questions. Is the Iphone app sufficient or do I need to buy a handheld GPS. I purchased a Magellan Triton 400 but then found the app and might take the triton back if the app works.
Any hints or tips to get me started would be appreciated.
